When we talk about distance learning or distance education for the purpose of higher education, we found different options available in the Indian Education Industry. But before joining any university or institution one should always check the recognition’s, accreditation, brand value, course structure and service support system etc of that particular university or institution. Distance learning fulfils the need of the peoples who live in small towns or cities having limited options for higher education. It also caters working professionals having a need of higher education with their job.
In the Indian education system there are certain norms or rules and regulations for the universities and institutions made by the government bodies as UGC, AICTE and DEB. There are different types of university and institution in India categorised by the UGC. There are central universities, state universities, private universities and deemed-to-be universities working in India as per the rules and regulations implemented on them by the UGC and other regulatory bodies. As far as distance learning is concerned, central universities are free to offer courses throughout the country. State and private universities can offer distance mode courses within the state. Deemed-to-be universities can offer distance learning programs within their headquarter area with the permission of UGC. Along with this Min. of HRD (Govt. of India), in March 2018, has granted autonomy to 60 Higher Educational Institutions which have maintained high academic standards. This means, these will remain within the ambit of UGC but will have the freedom to start new courses, off campus centres, skill development courses, research parks and any other new academic programs. They will also have the freedom to hire foreign faculty, enrol foreign students, give incentive based emoluments to the faculty, enter into academic collaborations and run open distance learning programmes. These Universities/Institutions have been selected on the basis of National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) ratings. The Institutions having a NAAC score of 3.5 and above, have been placed in Category I, the Institutions having a NAAC score of 3.26 to 3.5 have been placed in Category II and the remaining are placed in Category III.
